March 11 thru 20, 2015

3-11-15 Bridge class after school of 30 minutes on ice and 30 minutes off ice training. She made it through the entire class this week.

1st Grade Common Core Math

1st Grade Common Core Math Worksheet 3-12-15

20150312_CommonCoreMath3-12-15 Her Common Core math worksheet was ridiculous today. We spent an hour struggling through 2 pages of regrouping and finding the rule; she gets 4’s in math and was a few points away from the highly capable program. It was in the upper-60’s and sunny this afternoon, she should have been outside playing instead of spending an hour doing math worksheets…she’s 6-years-old! But, I make her complete them because it’s only going to get worse. Finished just in time to make it to her dance class 5 minutes late, then she wanted to go to the talent show at her school, so we stayed for about 20 minutes, then headed home to get her to bed since she has 7:30am ice skating in the morning.
57 + ____ = 63
How many 10s in 57 = 5 = 50
How many 1s in 57 = 7 = 7
How many more 1’s to make another 10 = 3 + 7 = 10
Now you have six 10’s = 60 and have added 3 one’s to get to 60.
How many more one’s to get to 63 = 3.
3 + 3 = 6
Answer = 6
Imagine being back in Elementary School. You are learning addition. Your teacher asks you to add 8+4. This takes nearly a minute. It isn’t because you are not proficient at adding with your fingers or counting dots on numbers. This is because you are following a complex Base 10 System by adding the highest number in the equation to equal ten and then subtracting what you added to the higher number to the lower number, and then finding the sum of the two final numbers you have left. If you are totally lost, or even if you understand, you might be questioning, what 8 year-old should ever go through this sort of complex and perplexing system when you can just add 8+4 in just a couple of seconds? Allegedly, it is because the Base 10 System allows children to ‘further understand numbers’ by making them horribly complex.” – Red Millennial

Ice Skating Practice

Ice Skating Practice 3-13-15

3-13-15 It’s a LEAP day..a non-school day for students that teachers use for professional development. Extended day was open at her school, so she went after her 7:30am ice skating lesson until 2pm. She lost TV today because she was talking back and not listening last night in front of her friends at the talent show. We get home and remind her she can’t watch TV, but mommy may watch the news…I think she’s attempting to use reverse psychology because she said, “I like the news, but don’t turn it on!” She’s improving quickly with her skating:

3-15-15 Last day of Girl Scout cookie sales! Went out for sushi for dinner at her favorite restaurant…she eats more than mom & dad when we go there. I posted this image describing Common Core Math a couple of days ago on my Facebook page. She saw it and has been saying, “If you have 4 pencils and 7 apples, how many pancakes will fit on the roof? Purple because aliens don’t wear hats,” all day and laughing. Her dad told her to tell her teacher this is Common Core, She said, “no way!”

Seal watercolor painting

3-17-15 We woke up earlier than usual, so she wanted to go to the ice rink before school. She was able to practice for 20 minutes. After school, she had art class and finished her water color painting of “Bob the Seal”.

Child’s Pose 3-18-15

3-18-15 She forgot her backpack this morning, so came back home and brought it to her after lecturing her about getting ready for school and how I wouldn’t go get it next time all the way to school. When I dropped her off, I could tell she was mimicking me walking to the door bobbing her head and back and forth. After school we received a package from Bachan and Aunt Jenny that had a kimono and other items from Okinawa in it; they just got back from a family vacation there.  Proceeded to on and off ice training. Off ice consisted of a portion of stretching and yoga. Dropped her off at home, then I went to information night for Steve and Kate’s Camp. Not sure I’m sold on it for summer daycare. Came home and tucked her into bed and I headed back out for a yoga class.

Art Docent

Art Docent 3-19-15

3-19-15 Volunteered at her school as an art docent in the afternoon. Saw first hand how some kids (mainly boys) tease and pick on other boys in the classroom. Had about 25 minutes to do homework and get a snack after school, then she had her Girl Scout meeting followed by dance class. Raced home to drop her off with daddy, so I could make it to a yoga class. We were both exhausted by the end of the day,
3-20-15 Rainy first day of spring, but it’s Friday! Asked her if she wanted to go skating or stay at home after school. She chose stay at home and I was relieved! We needed some downtime.
